Our US impression is of the 13th Regiment of US Infantry

First at Vicksburg

Background

We portray the 13th Regiment of US Infantry constituted on the 3rd of May in 1861 via general Order No. 33, as part of the expansion of the Regular Army. Our impression is of Company G, 1st Battalion. The Regiment consisted of three battalions, each battalion containing eight companies. In the 1866 reorganization of the Regular Army, the second battalion became the 22nd Regiment of US Infantry, the third battalion became the 31st Regiment of US Infantry, and companies I and K were added to the 13th Infantry.

The regimental motto was earned on May 19th, 1863 in the assault on the Confederate defensive works at Vicksburg. The 13th Infantry was the first unit to plant its colors on the Confederate works. The previous motto of the Regiment was "Forty Rounds" in reply to the query of a soldier as to what was to Corps Badge of the Corps to which the Regiment belonged. The forty round cartridge box then became the Corps Badge of the XV Corps.

Headquarters for the Regiment were established at Jefferson Barracks, MO, where Companies A, B, C, and G of the 1st Battalion were organized.
